The Delivery Platform We Built for Ourselves

Panel is our own delivery platform — Jira's time tracking and reporting with Notion's simplicity, plus the workflows neither could give us. Self-hosted, with a Next.js web app, a Tauri desktop client, and client dashboards that cost nothing per seat.

Jira's reporting, Notion's simplicity, and the workflows neither could give us

Like most delivery teams, we had been running on two tools that each did half the job. Jira gave us the time tracking and reporting a services business runs on — what a project consumed, what's billable, where the effort actually went. Notion gave our project managers and developers something they enjoyed opening: simple, flexible, quick to shape around a piece of work. Neither gave us both, and both carried a layer of noise and configuration that had very little to do with delivering client work.

Panel is our answer. It's an internal platform built on Next.js and hosted on our own infrastructure, with a desktop client built in Tauri for the people who live in it all day. It carries across the parts of Jira we rely on — time by project, billable versus non-billable, effort mix, retainer burn, rework rate — and pairs them with the calm, document-led interface we moved to Notion for in the first place. On top of that sit the workflows specific to how we actually deliver: our own ticket phases, our own QA and hand-off steps, and automation covering the timekeeping and admin that used to be done by hand.

Because the platform is ours, our clients get a dashboard into their own projects — tickets, time and reporting — with no per-seat licence and no additional cost. That is the wider point, and the direction we think the industry is moving: for a growing number of businesses, one bespoke platform built at a sensible price beats years of per-user SaaS subscriptions. Over the life of a tool like this the difference runs to thousands of pounds, and you end up with software shaped around the business rather than the other way around.
